The Invalid Care Allowance regulations permit carers to take a break of up to four weeks within any 26 week period and continue to receive the Carer's Allowance.
Also allowable is an additional break of up to 12 in any 26 week period if the carer or the person being cared for should go into hospital.
The Carers' Allowance may cease if the individual receiving care is hospitalised for more than 28 days - under these circumstances, their Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance will stop.
New carers need to providing care for a continuous period of 22 weeks before they are able to take a break and still receive the Carer's Allowance benefit.
Because the week considered from Sunday to Saturday, it is within the regulations to take a week's break from mid-week to mid-week without having to count either week as a week off.
