The 35 Hour Rule and the Carer's Allowance

Qualification for the Carer's Allowance depends on the necessity of care for at least 35 hours a week.

The 35 hours of care must be required each and every week and is not taken as an average requirement over a longer period.

The 35 hour rule also states that the time must be spent caring for just one person.

Parents caring for a child during the school holidays qualify only for the period of time the child spends at home.

The Carer's Allowance week starts from Sunday morning and ends on Saturday night.

Preparation time necessary for caring for the severely disabled person's visit or clearing up after they have left may be considered as part of the 35 hours.

Similarly, time taken transporting the person to and from their residence also counts.
